Facing an uncertain future
Sometimes a seemingly negative setback can turn into a bright future. That’s the case for Kim, a recent graduate of the Right Management Career Transitions program. Having been released from her employment, Kim found herself experiencing a broad range of emotions including fear, relief, and uncertainty. But she was also excited about a new challenge. An unfortunate situation was providing her with an opportunity to rewrite her employment path. But where should she start?
Supporting Kim through career transition while encouraging a balanced life
Kim came to Right Management as part of her employee severance package. Right from the start, Kim realized she was not alone. Kim found confidence, and comfort, being part of a room filled with other experienced individuals who were also starting the job search journey. Kim’s Right Management counselor, Suzanne, guided her through the program that included coaching and assessments to help her determine career next steps; targeted job leads and access to local job resource consultants; and interview tools and resources.
Suzanne’s words and advice helped Kim to stay focused in a productive manner and appreciate the time away from work to find her perfect position. This included permission to walk away from the process when the journey became overwhelming. It also helped Kim put the process in perspective: she became aware that rejections were a business decision. She also fine-tuned what type of position was right for her.
In the end, Kim was able to land a position in another business sector, where her new employers are working with her to strengthen her weaker skills and enhance her strong abilities. She also received a raise in salary. Kim now begins every morning with a powerful purpose.
Previously serving as a Global Manager in Sustainability and EHS in the transportation equipment manufacturing industry, Kim is now an Environmental Health and Safety Manager in the food manufacturing industry.
“I was not alone”
Kim says, “This journey is scary. Having watched so many individuals previously go through it, I truly thought I was prepared. But until your moment comes, you really don’t understand the breadth of emotions that being severed from a long-term position and looking for employment can throw at you. Navigating these waters is difficult enough even with a roadmap. And while there is so much information available on the internet, it can also be overwhelming. For these reasons I am so very grateful to have had access to the program and information provided by Right Management. Through the tools provided, I was able to recognize and reaffirm my strengths and experience and clearly present in an interview what value I would bring to the company and the position. “
